Pain research-Psychophysiology

Our Institute has a longstanding expertise in experimental pain and stress research. In our research, we combine experimental methods from the fields of neuroscience, psychoneuroimmunology, and medical psychology. Our Institute also offers consulting and support for the questionnaire-based assessment of pain, stress and psychological well-being.

Pain research

Methods and equipment:

  • Experimental acute pain models, including MR-compatible Pinprick set, Algometry, MR-compatible thermode (PATHWAY CHEPS, Medoc Ltd. Advanced Medical Systems, in cooperation with Prof. U. Bingel, Department of Neurology)
  • Psychometrics (questionnaire-based assessment of acute and chronic pain)

Psychophysiology/Stress research

Methods:
Assessment of electrocardiogram, heart rate variability, psychometrics (questionnaire-based assessment of acute and chronic stress)

Equipment:

  • Task Force Monitor (CNSystems)

Neuroimaging

Methods
Structural und functional brain imaging (magnetic resonance imaging)

Equipment:
Access to 3-Tesla and 7-Tesla MRI (in cooperation with the Institute of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology and Neuroradiology; Erwin L. Hahn Institute for Magnetic Resonance Imaging).

The Institute of Medical Psychology was founded in 1978 and is one of the pre-clinical Departments of the Essen University Hospital.
